No. 21 Cardinals knock off IUP, 3-0

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 24) – The No. 21 Wheeling University volleyball team took down Indiana (Pa.) 3-0 at the McDonough Center Tuesday evening in a non-conference match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals led throughout the first set. Although IUP closed to within three points multiple times, Wheeling did not allow it to get any closer and earned a 25-20 win.
  • Wheeling got off to a fast start and opened up an 8-1 lead early in the second set.
  • The Crimson Hawks drew within four, 11-7, but the Cardinals pulled away again and rebuilt its lead to eight. Wheeling eventually closed out the set at 25-19.
  • IUP kept things close early in the third set. Wheeling led 16-14 before closing out the match with a 9-to-3 run to finish off the sweep. 
TEAM LEADERS
  • Senior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) led the team with 12 kills and four blocks. Kramer hit .545 for the match with zero errors on 22 attacks.
  • Junior Abby Strait (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) posted 10 kills on 15 attacks with zero errors to hit a team-best .667 for the match. She also added three blocks.
  • Senior setter Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) dished out 37 assists.
MATCH NOTES
  • As a team, Wheeling hit a season-best .363 with 43 kills on 91 attacks with 10 errors.
  • The Cardinals limited IUP to a .103 hitting percentage and forced 25 attack errors.
  • Prior to the match, Kramer was presented with a ball to commemorate her 1,000thkill that she collected earlier in the season.
  • Earlier in the day, the Cardinals swept the weekly conference awards with Breanna Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) being named Offensive Player of the Week, while junior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
