Wheeling Jesuit suffers loss at Lake Erie, 20-10

PAINSEVILLE, Ohio (April 6) - The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team was defeated 20-10 at Lake Erie in a Great Midwest Atlantic Conference (G-MAC) matchup on Saturday night.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the G-MAC, while the Storm improves to 2-7 overall, 2-1 in league play.

Senior Jamison Smith (Butler, Pa./Butler) recorded his third game of the season with four goals, leading the Cardinals against the Storm. Freshman Connor O'Brien (New Albany, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) recorded a season-high five assists, two of which led to goals by Smith.

WJU claimed the first goal of the game after sophomore Isaac Leech (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) won a groundball from the first face-off. Leech connected a pass to O'Brien who found Smith in perfect position for a shot. The Cardinals struck again shortly after, going up 2-0 at the 13 minute mark. Lake Erie claimed the next four goals, but Wheeling Jesuit stayed close behind with another O'Brien to Smith goal. The Storm got the upper hand, going up 6-5 by the end of the first period.

The Cardinals struggled to find an opening in the second period, giving Lake Erie a chance to go on an 8-1 run which sent the game into halftime with the Storm up 14-6.

Wheeling Jesuit allowed two goals at the beginning of the third period. Goals by senior Phillip Burns (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and sophomore Nico Cicco (Butler, Pa./Butler) finally broke the silence for the Cardinals, and gave the team some momentum. WJU took the next five shots on goal of the game, but were unable to place the ball in the back of the net. With one more goal in the third period, Lake Erie went up 17-8 going into the fourth.

The Cardinals fought hard in the fourth period, but struggled against the Storm's 16 shots. Lake Erie capitalized on three of the attempts, while WJU was only able to slip by the goalkeeper twice. The Storm maintained the lead, winning 20-10.

Sophomore goalie PJ Campion (McLean, Va./McLean) tallied 11 saves for WJU.

The Cardinals travel back home to play in another G-MAC game versus Seton Hill on Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m.
