Cardinals fall to Mercyhurst, 21-4

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 20) – The Wheeling Jesuit University men's lacrosse team was defeated 21-4 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest against Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals drop to 3-10 overall, 1-4 in the Great Midwest with the loss. Meanwhile, the Lakers improve to 10-3 on the season, 5-1 in league play with the win.

Freshman midfielder Patrick Coggins (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore), senior attack Jamison Smith (Butler, Pa./Butler), sophomore midfielder Nico Cicco (Butler, Pa./Butler), and senior midfielder Michael Schonhiutt (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) accounted for Wheeling Jesuit's four goals. Smith also recorded an assist to lead the Cardinals in points with two.

Mercyhurst raced out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter. The Lakers scored six more times in the second quarter to go into halftime up 15-0.

Coggins put the Cardinals on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a goal from close range.

Wheeling Jesuit held Mercyhurst to a single goal in the final quarter and scored three-unanswered to close out the game.

WJU out-shot Mercyhurst 24-13 in the second half.

Sophomore goalkeeper PJ Campion (McLean, Va./McLean) made 11 saves in the loss.

Seniors Jamison Smith, Phillip Burns (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro), Michael Schonhiutt, Brendan Arbaugh (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans), Jordan Getz (Calgary, Alberta/William Aberheart), Samuel Skinner (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington), and Connor Buzzelli (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) were recognized prior to the start of their last home game at Bishop Schmitt Field for their contributions to the program.

The Cardinals will travel to Alderson Broaddus for their season finale on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
