Cardinals take down W.Va. Wesleyan on Senior Day, 17-14

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 14) – The Wheeling Jesuit University women's lacrosse team posted a 17-14 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Senior Day Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.

The Cardinals improve to 9-5 overall, 5-2 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Bobcats drop to 0-7 in league play, 5-9 overall this season.

Freshman Mackenzie Kaderabek (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) led the Cardinals with seven goals and seven draw controls in the win. Sophomore Paige Orbell (Severn, Md./Old Mill) added five goals of her own to go with two assists and five draw controls, while senior Ally Coggins (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) finished with two goals and a team-best three assists.

West Virginia Wesleyan opened up a 4-2 lead after 11 minutes of play. The Cardinals tied the game up with goals by Orbell and Kaderabek with 16:54 left in the first half, before the Bobcats re-established a two-goal leads of 6-4 and 7-5.

Orbell notched a goal right before halftime to make the score 7-6 with less than 15 seconds on the clock, but a last-second attempt to tie the game came up short and allowed WVWC to take the lead into halftime.

Wheeling Jesuit recorded three-straight goals to begin the second half and take a 9-7 lead that forced a West Virginia Wesleyan timeout with 21 minutes left in the game.

The Bobcats scored the game's next goal to make it a one-goal game, but the Cardinals went on a 5-1 run to open up a 14-9 advantage with 12:29 to play in the contest. Kaderabek was the catalyst for WJU with three of the team's goals during that span.

WVWC made things interesting with three-straight goals of its own to make the score 14-12 with 7:55 left on the clock. The Cardinals responded with three-consecutive of their own to rebuild the lead to 17-12 with less than five minutes to play and put the game out of reach.

Sophomore goalie Emma Stair (Westminster, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) made nine saves in net to help preserve the win.

The Cardinals out-shot the Bobcats 37 to 29 in the match and won 22 of the 33 draw controls.

Senior Kate Calder (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) finished with a team-high nine draw controls in the win, while junior Eily Cogan (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) led the squad with five groundballs.

The Cardinals close out the regular-season with three road games, beginning on Saturday, April 20 when they travel to South Euclid, Ohio to take on Notre Dame for a match at 12 p.m.
