SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (April 18) – Led by a 10-goal performance from freshman
Mackenzie Kaderabek (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), the Cardinals notched a 22-16 win over Notre Dame (Ohio) Thursday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) game.
The Wheeling Jesuit University women's lacrosse team improves to 10-5 overall, 6-2 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Falcons drop to 3-5 in league play and 7-9 overall this season.
Kaderabek matched a season-high with 10 goals on 14 shots. She also added a team-high eight draw controls and converted two of her three free-position attempts.
A trio of Cardinals scored three goals, including senior
Ally Coggins (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore), junior
Megan Mangia (Gahanna, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and sophomore
Bethany Wallingford (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicote). Both Coggins and Mangia each added two assists to their final line for a five-point game.
Notre Dame led 2-1 seven minutes into the game when Cardinals rolled off three-straight goals to take a 4-2 advantage with 20:48 remaining in the first period.
The Falcons had their best stretch of the game when they went on a 5-2 run to take a 7-6 lead entering the final four minutes of the first half.
Wheeling Jesuit responded with its best run when it scored six-unanswered goals in the final three minutes until halftime to take a 12-7 lead into the break.
Notre Dame managed to pull back within one goal at 16-15 halfway through the second half, but goals by Wallingford and senior
Kate Calder (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) rebuilt the lead to three at 18-15 with 7:25 left in the game.
The Falcons drew back within two goals, but the Cardinals closed out the final five minutes of the game with three goals to complete the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emma Stair (Westminster, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) finished with seven saves to earn the win.
While shots were nearly even (NDC 41-40), shots on goal were in favor of the Cardinals at 31-23.
The Cardinals will travel to league-leading UVa-Wise next Friday, April 26 for a match at 3 p.m.
