Softball closes out play at PFX Spring Games in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 CLERMONT, Fla. (March 8) - The Wheeling Jesuit University softball team closed out play at the PFX Spring Games in Florida Thursday afternoon.

The Cardinals finished the trip 3-9 overall, with all three victories coming against regional opponents. Wheeling Jesuit's record now stands at 3-11 overall and the team will return north for its next games. WJU will host Ashland for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 14 at the JB Chambers Complex at 3 p.m.

TUESDAY
Malone 7, Wheeling Jesuit 3 | BOX SCORE
The Cardinals took a lead early with a three-run second inning, but were unable to hold off the Pioneers in a 7-3 loss on Tuesday afternoon.

WJU trailed 1-0 in the second inning when senior Courtney Rogers (Hurricane, W.Va./Hurricane) smacked her fifth home run of the season to tie the game up. Consecutive one-out doubles by seniors Jackie Cramer (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville) and Taylor DiPerna (Coraopolis, Pa./OLSH) gave the Cardinals the lead, before a RBI-single by senior Molly Welsh (Bethel Park, Pa./OLSH) made the score 3-1.

Malone reclaimed the lead in the third inning with three runs to make the score 4-3 and added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings to build up a 7-3 advantage. The Cardinals put runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to manufacture any additional runs to draw even with the Pioneers.

DiPerna and freshman Kelsey Barron (La Salle, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) each contributed two hits in the loss.

Senior Erin Unterbrink (Raymond, Ohio/Marysville) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work.

Saint Rose 8, Wheeling Jesuit 4 | BOX SCORE
Another late rally sunk the Cardinals in their nightcap on Tuesday against Saint Rose.

WJU took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on the power of RBI-doubles by both Rogers and Cramer. After Saint Rose drew within one run in the bottom half of the third, the Cardinals got the run right back with an RBI base-hit by junior Crystal Carillo (Los Angeles, Calif./Warren) to make the score 4-2 in the fourth inning.

Saint Rose broke out in the fifth inning for five runs on six hits, including a pair of home runs, to take an 8-4 advantage. Wheeling Jesuit was limited to one hit over the final three innings of the game and were unable to answer back.

Welsh and Barron each finished with two hits, while Barron added two runs scored to her final line. Cramer was the top run producer with two RBI.

Freshman Madison Macy (Meramora, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) was tagged with the loss after yielding seven runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings on the rubber.


WEDNESDAY
Findlay 9, Wheeling Jesuit 6 | BOX SCORE
The Cardinals looked poised to open Wednesday with a win, but an eight-run sixth inning by the Oilers dealt WJU a 9-6 loss.

Wheeling Jesuit took advantage of a Findlay error in the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. Welsh drove home another run in the second inning and then scored herself on a double-steal attempt to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

The Oilers pushed one across in the third inning, but WJU got the run back with an RBI-single by sophomore Alaina York (Lower Burrell, Pa./Lower Burrell) to rebuild the Cardinal lead to 5-1 after the top half of the sixth inning.

Findlay had two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth when they rolled off seven-straight hits, capped off by a three-run home run, to take a 9-6 lead.

WJU was down to its final out when it plated a run on a RBI-single by Rogers, but the Oilers recorded the final out to deal the Cardinals the loss.

York was the top hitter for WJU with three hits, including a double, one run, one RBI and a stolen base. Both Rogers and Welsh also contributed two hits and a RBI in the game.

Seton Hill 6, Wheeling Jesuit 0 | BOX SCORE
Wheeling Jesuit was limited to five hits and committed four errors in the team's 6-0 loss to Seton Hill to close out play on Wednesday in Clermont.

The Griffins scored two runs in the second (unearned) and tacked on three more in the third to open up a 5-0 lead.

The Cardinals had their best scoring chance in the bottom of the third when they had runners at second and third with no outs, but both runners were thrown out at the plate in consecutive at-bats to keep WJU off of the scoreboard. Seton Hill went on to tack on an insurance run in the seventh to secure the win.

Rogers led the offense with two hits in the loss.

Unterbrink earned a no-decision on the mound after she allowed one run (unearned) on six hits with four strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work.


THURSDAY
Wilmington (Del.) 9, Wheeling Jesuit 0 (F/6) | BOX SCORE
Wheeling Jesuit was defeated 9-0 by Wilmington to open up play on the final day in Clermont.

After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats put a four-spot on the scoreboard in the second inning behind four hits.

Wilmington kept the Cardinal offense in-check and tacked on three more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead. WJU put a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to bring her around to score, giving the run-rule win to the Wildcats.

Welsh finished the game 2-for-3 at the dish and collected both of the team's hits.

Wheeling Jesuit 8, Walsh 0 (F/6) | BOX SCORE NOT YET AVAILABLE
The Cardinals closed out the PFX Spring Games on a high-note with an 8-0 regional-win over Walsh that ended on a run-rule in the sixth inning.
