Wheeling Jesuit competes at Raleigh Relays and Trojan Challenge

MOUNT OLIVE and RALEIGH, N.C. (March 30) - The Wheeling Jesuit women's track and field team had two hit the NCAA Provo mark after traveling to North Carolina to compete in the Raleigh Relays and Trojan Challenge beginning on Friday. 

Senior Lauren Dickerson (Triadelphia, W.Va./Wheeling Park) swept the field in discus, hitting the NCAA Provo mark. With a distance of 47.45 meters, she claimed victory, hit a personal record, and now sits at number two all time best in WJU history. Senior Christina Gibson (Los Angeles, Calif./West L.A. Community College) also hit a personal record in the discus, marking a distance of 37.35 meters and finishing fifth overall.

Dickerson went on the place fifth in the shot put with a mark of 11.94 meters. 

Freshman Lilly Ritz hit the NCAA Provo mark and earned first at the Trojan Challenge. She set a new school record and a Mount Olive facility record with a height of 1.69 meters in the high jump.

The personal records continued with sophomore Asya Carney (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) in the javelin. She threw a distance of 32.87 meters, ranking number four all time at WJU.

Fellow sophomore Mariah Harmon (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) made it to seventh in school history after earning third and setting a personal record of 14.91 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles. She also finished the 200 meter dash in 15th with a time of 26.77 seconds. 

The Cardinals ran a season's best of 49.01 seconds in the 4x100 meter relay with a team comprised of Harmon, redshirt sophomore Anna Massa (La Pera, Spain/Frederic Marti), and freshmen Aniyah Benjamin (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Devyn Rosenberg (Henderson, Nev./Bishop Gorman).

Massa went on to finish first in the pole vault with a height of 3.85 meters and sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.15 meters.

Benjamin and Rosenberg also ranked among the top-10 in the 100 and 200 meter dash. Benjamin crossed the line in 12.31 and 25.66 seconds, while Rosenberg finished in 12.54 and 26.36 seconds, respectively. Freshman Skylar Langford (Smithfield, Ohio/Buckeye Local) just missed the finals with a time of 13.20 seconds. 

Freshman Caroline Fodor (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) and Sophomore Lindsay Scheffel (Bruceton Mills, W.Va./Preston) finished back to back in the 800 meter run. Fodor crossed the line in fifth with a time of two minutes, 23.40 seconds followed by Scheffel in two minutes, 23.53 seconds. Scheffel went on to win the 1500 meter run with a personal record of four minutes, 56.23 seconds. 

Wheeling Jesuit saw great performances in the shot put as well. Senior Alba Torres (Ordizi, Spain/Cowley College) was the runner-up with a throw of 12.78 meters, while redshirt sophomore Liz Fleming (Washington, Pa./Trinity) followed in third with a distance of 12.47 meters. 

At Raleigh Relays, sophomore Ashley McIntosh (California, Pa./California Area) finished 18th out of 46 competitors in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of one minutes, 3.25 seconds. Redshirt senior Kelsey Chambers (New Cumberland, W.Va./Oak Glen) now ranks number four all time best at WJU in the 10k after crossing the finish line in 37 minutes, 14.47 seconds. 

The Cardinals take a weekend off before traveling to the Mondschein Multi, Bucknell Bison Invite, and Walsh Invitational beginning on April 11.
