TIGERVILLE, S.C. (March 2) - The Wheeling Jesuit University men's lacrosse team was dealt a 16-6 loss by North Greenville Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.Â
The Cardinals drop to 1-5 overall, while the Crusaders improve their record to 2-4.
Senior
Jamison Smith (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored three goals to lead the team, while fellow seniors
Michael Schonhiutt (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and
Travis Getz (Calgary, Alberta/William Aberheart) added their own goals for WJU.
Wheeling Jesuit kept up with North Greenville during the first quarter, winning the majority of the face-offs. Smith and Schonhiutt each put a goal in the back of the net before five minutes had ticked off of the clock. However, the Crusaders gained the upper-hand by winning 10 ground balls and causing seven turnovers. The Cardinals stuck close behind the Crusaders, but were out scored 4-2 by the second quarter.Â
The Cardinals were shut out of the second quarter, allowing North Greenville to win five out of six face-offs and rack up 12 ground balls compared to WJU's three. The Crusaders controlled the ball and put five more points on the board before halftime.Â
NGU went on a 3-0 run to start the third quarter before Schonhiutt found an opening and scored his second goal at the eight minute mark. The Crusaders answered with a goal a minute later to make the score 13-3 with seven minutes left to go in the third. The rest of the third was quiet, with neither team able to find the back of the net.Â
The Cardinals started the fourth quarter off strong with Smith adding a goal in the first minute of play. WJU found some momentum and took five shots while holding the Crusaders to one in the next five minutes. Unfortunately, the Cardinals could not sneak the ball past North Greenville's freshman goalkeeper Cameron Meyer. In the last 10 minutes of play, the Crusaders found openings to put three more goals on the board. Smith and Getz each recorded a goal in the final minutes, but it was not enough for the Cardinals.Â
WJU sophomore goalkeeper
PJ Campion (McLean, Va./McLean) tallied 16 saves during the match.
Thomas Cecere led the game in goals, recording five for the Crusaders.Â
The Cardinals are back in action on Bishop Schmitt Field to take on NYIT in another non-conference game on Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m.
