Cardinals fall to NYIT, 20-6

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 9) – The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team was dealt a 20-6 loss by NYIT Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match at Bishop Schmitt Field.

The Cardinals drop to 1-6 overall, while NYIT improves to 2-4 this season.

Six different Cardinals scored goals in the game, while senior Michael Schonhiutt (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) led the team with two points (one goal, one assist).

NYIT scored the game's first three goals, before a marker by sophomore Max Butler (Elizabeth Colo./Ponderosa) made the score 3-1 after the first quarter.

NYIT scored the first goal of the second quarter, but the Cardinals rallied back with three-straight goals, including one by Schonhiutt to tie the game at 4-4 with 9:04 left in the first half.

The run forced NYIT to take a timeout and the visitors came out of the break four-straight goals of its own to close out the first half with an 8-4 lead.

NYIT ran its goal-streak to 13 to take a commanding 17-4 lead in the fourth quarter. A man-up goal by sophomore Nico Cicco (Butler, Pa./Butler) ended the Cardinal drought with 13:01 to play in the game, but the damage had already been done. NYIT ran the clock out to secure the win.

The Cardinals were out-shot 52 to 31 in the match. Sophomore goalie PJ Campion (McLean, Va./McLean) made 15 saves in the game for WJU.

The Cardinals have a break before their next game on Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Walsh for the team's Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener at 1 p.m.
