Cardinals swept at Cal U

WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 19) - The Wheeling Jesuit University baseball team was knocked off twice by California (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Wild Things Park.

The Cardinals drop to 2-14 overall, while the Vulcans improve to 12-3 this season.

GAME ONE: Cal U 14, Wheeling Jesuit 0
A big third inning for the Vulcans propelled them past the Cardinals in the first game of the doubleheader.

The game was scoreless when Cal U batted through the lineup and posted nine runs on the scoreboard to race out in front.

The Cardinals scattered five hits in the game, but were unable to push any runner across.

Freshman Chardale Folks (Bowie, Md./C.H. Flowers) led Wheeling Jesuit with a double and a triple in the loss.

GAME TWO: Cal U 8, Wheeling Jesuit 1
The Cardinals offense was limited to two hits in the game two loss.

Cal U opened up a 7-0 lead with multi-run innings in the first, second and fourth. The Cardinals scraped across its first run of the day when sophomore Hayden Hizer (Paden City, W.Va./Paden City) led the top of the fifth off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Tristan Grimes (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) to make the score 7-1.

The Vulcans got the run back in the bottom of the fifth and only yielded a walk over the final two frames.

Wheeling Jesuit heads back into Mountain East Conference (MEC) play this weekend when it travels to Buckhannon to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m.
