Wheeling Jesuit opens MEC play with win over Concord; swept by UVa-Wise

WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 17) - The Wheeling Jesuit University baseball team opened Mountain East Conference (MEC) play with a 4-3 win over Concord late Saturday night at Wild Things Park. The Cardinals were defeated 7-2 in the nightcap, before falling to UVa-Wise in a pair of games on Sunday back in Washington, Pennsylvania, including a 1-0 defeat in the opener.

WJU moves to 2-12 overall, 1-3 in the MEC following the weekend slate.

Saturday, March 16
GAME ONE: Wheeling Jesuit 4, Concord 3
Behind a solid outing from freshman pitcher Payton Farris (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), the Cardinals held on for a 4-3 win against Concord to open MEC play.

Concord led 1-0 in the fifth when first baseman Lucas Rawlins (Pickerington, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) gave WJU the lead with a two-RBI single. Right fielder Zach Blumling (Granville, Ohio/Granville) added to the lead when he plated two more runs in the sixth to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.

Concord made things interesting in the seventh inning when got a double, followed by consecutive two-out hits to score twice and pull within one run at 4-3. With runners on the corners, senior pitcher Logan Menear (Reedsville, W.Va./Preston) forced a fly ball into center field for the final out to preserve the victory.

Farris picked up his first-collegiate win after going 6.2 innings and limiting Concord to three runs on 10 hits with one strikeout (87 pitches).

GAME TWO: Concord 7, Wheeling Jesuit 2

The Mountain Lions built up a 6-0 lead and held off any rally attempt by the Cardinals in game two.

Blumling got WJU on the board in the fifth inning with a two-out, two-RBI single to make the score 6-2. The Cardinals had runners in scoring position after a passed ball, but Concord stranded the runners to maintain its four-run cushion.

WJU put runners on in the sixth, but were unable to drive any home, before going down in order in the seventh to end the game.

Blumling added to his total with four total RBI between the two games versus the Mountain Lions.

The contest went into Sunday morning with the final out being recorded well after midnight.

Sunday, March 17
GAME ONE: UVa-Wise 1, Wheeling Jesuit 0
Despite getting a complete-game effort out of junior Josh Bell (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area), the Cardinals offense was unable to provide any support in a 1-0 loss to open play on Sunday versus UVa-Wise.

Bell tossed all seven innings and held the Cavaliers to one run (unearned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks (112 pitches).

UVa-Wise scored the game's lone run in the fourth inning. A Cavalier reached base on a one-out error and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals best chance to score came in the fifth when freshman catcher Colin Caven (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) led the frame off with a double and advanced to third on a balk with no outs. WJU batters were unable to put the ball into play as the next three batters all went down on strikes to end the threat.

The Cardinals had a base runner in each of the final two innings from walks, but were unable to find any timely hitting in the loss.

Rawlins led the Cardinals at the plate with two hits of the team's three hits and a walk in the loss.

GAME TWO: UVa-Wise 7, Wheeling Jesuit 4
Wheeling Jesuit led early in the final game of the weekend, but a pair of costly errors in the fifth inning allowed UVa-Wise to come away with a 7-4 win to complete the series sweep Sunday night.

Blumling continued his solid weekend with a two-RBI double in the first inning to give WJU the lead. Freshman center fielder Nick Serafino (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) added to the lead with a run scoring base hit of his own to make the score 3-0.

Wise got two runs back in the third inning, but a solo home run over the left field fence by Caven in the fourth inning rebuilt the Cardinal lead back to 4-2.

WJU got into trouble in the fifth inning when the first two batters reached base. The next batter attempted to sacrifice bunt, but two errant throws on the play allowed two runs to score and tie the game with no outs. Wise got two more RBI-base hits and converted a safety squeeze play to take a 7-4 lead.

The Cardinals had runners on base in the final three innings, but were unable to bring anyone across home plate to narrow the gap.

Serefino paced WJU with two hits, while Blumling's two RBIs led the team.

Wheeling Jesuit will return to Wild Things Park on Tuesday, March 20 when they play California (Pa.) for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
