INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 8) - The Wheeling Jesuit University men's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a 20-8 loss at No. 20 University of Indianapolis Friday afternoon in a non-conference match.
Freshman
Connor O'Brien (New Albany, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) posted a four-point performance with three goals and one assist in his collegiate-debut. Senior
Phillip Burns (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) added two goals, while senior
Travis Getz (Calgary, Alberta/William Aberheart) and freshman
Noah Larouere (Bethal Park, Pa./Bethal Park) each chipped in a goal and an assist.
UIndy gained the upper hand early with five-straight goals to start the game, before a man-up tally by Burns in the final minute of the first quarter put the Cardinals on the board. Despite the goal allowed, the Greyhounds would go on to out-score Wheeling Jesuit 5-2 in each of the next two periods to establish a double-digit lead.
The Cardinals put together a solid fourth quarter, which included a 3-1 run over an eight-minute stretch late in the game. O'Brien found the back of the net twice during the run, but the deficit was too much to overcome for Wheeling Jesuit in the end.
UIndy was led offensively by Parker Kump and Drew Billig, who each scored five goals.
Wheeling Jesuit returns to the field on Sunday, February 10 for its home-opener when it hosts Maryville for a match at 1 p.m.
