WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 10) - The Wheeling Jesuit University men's lacrosse team was dealt a 24-14 loss by Maryville (Mo.) in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Cardinals fall to 0-2 overall, while the Saints improve their mark to 2-1 this season.
Freshman
Connor O'Brien (New Albany, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and senior
Travis Getz (Calgary, Alberta/William Aberheart) each posted four goals, while senior
Phillip Burns (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and freshman
Ryan Stakes (Frederick, Md./Saint James) each found the back of the net twice. Senior
Jamison Smith (Butler, Pa./Butler) also finished with a four-point game by tallying a goal and a team-best three assists.
The first quarter went back-and-forth with both squads trading goals. Maryville held the edge throughout the period and were clinging to a 6-5 lead after a strike by O'Brien in the final 30 seconds brought the Cardinals within one.
A goal by Burns at the 8:39-mark of the second quarter cut Maryville's lead to 9-7, but the Saints went on to out-score Wheeling Jesuit 5-1 down the stretch of the first half to take a 14-8 lead into halftime.
WJU drew back within five, 15-10, with the help of two goals by Getz with 10:09 to play in the third quarter. Maryville took command of the match with a pair of big scoring runs to rebuild its lead. The Cardinals managed to cut the lead to five, 19-12, with under 10 minutes left in the game, but the Saints never allowed Wheeling Jesuit to get any closer.
Maryville held a 50-to-29 advantage in the shots category. Sophomore goalkeeper
PJ Campion (McLean, Va./McLean) made 12 saves on 24 shots on goal in the loss.
Maryville was led by Lucas Shafer, who finished with seven goals and nine assists in the game.
The Cardinals are at home on Sunday February 17 when they host Malloy for a non-conference tilt at noon.
