Wheeling Jesuit prevails over Georgian Court, 9-8

WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 26) – The Wheeling Jesuit University men's lacrosse team scored a last minute goal at Georgian Court to come away with a 9-8 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cardinals improve to 1-4 overall with the win. The Lions drop to 1-2 this season with the loss.

Senior attackman Jamison Smith (Butler, Pa./Butler) had a game-high four goals, including the game-winner, and an assist. Senior midfielder Travis Getz (Calgary, Alberta/William Aberheart) added three goals of his own. Sophomore goalkeeper PJ Campion (McLean, Va./McLean) made seven crucial saves throughout the match.

The first period saw two goals in total, both coming from Wheeling Jesuit. Getz scored the first and Smith followed with a man-up goal three minutes later.

The second quarter was an even 2-2 draw. Smith and Getz both scored again for the Cardinals to keep their two goal advantage, 4-2.

Georgian Court opened the third period with three consecutive goals to take the lead for the first time in the contest, 5-4. Wheeling Jesuit fired back with a streak of four unanswered goals that extended into the final quarter and put WJU up 8-5.

The Lions went on the attack in the last six minutes of the game and found three more goals to bring the match level, 8-8, with 4:04 left on the clock. Then, with 1:02 remaining in the contest, Smith scored his fourth goal that proved to be the game-winner.

The Cardinals went 21 of 26 on clears and had 23 shots on goal compared to Georgian Court's 15 shots on goal.

Daniel Burnham was the leading scorer for the Lions with three goals. He also recorded an assist. Georgian Court's goalkeeper Chris Mulholland made 14 saves in the loss.

Wheeling Jesuit will head to Tigerville, S.C. for its next game against North Greenville on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m.
