Cardinals defeated by Chestnut Hill, 17-9

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. (Feb. 23) – The Wheeling Jesuit University men's lacrosse team was defeated 17-9 at Chestnut Hill in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 0-4 this season, while the Griffins climb to 2-0 overall.

Senior Phillip Burns (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) scored a career-high three goals for WJU, while freshman Connor O'Brien (New Albany, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) put two in the back of the net. Sophomore goalie PJ Campion (McLean, Va./McLean) recorded a career-high 17 saves against the relentless attack by the Griffins.

O'Brien opened the first quarter with his two goals, scoring one in the first minute of play. Two goals by Burns immediately afterwards put the Cardinals up 4-2 with four and a half minutes left on the clock. Senior Jamison Smith (Butler, Pa./Butler) used the momentum to sneak one in with a minute to go, finishing the first quarter ahead 5-3.

The Cardinals were shut out of the second quarter despite both teams recording three faceoff wins and eight ground balls. WJU took 10 shots, but were unable to capitalize with several hitting the crossbar and others being saved by the opposing goalie Austin Jones. Chestnut Hill went on a 5-0 run in the second quarter and managed to grab an 8-5 lead going into halftime.

The Cardinals fought to regain footing in the third quarter, winning the majority of faceoffs and taking seven shots. Nevertheless, the Griffins dominated ground balls 16-10 and bombarded Campion with 17 shots. Chestnut Hill saw four goals come from those shots, creating a 12-7 advantage by the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals put pressure on the Griffins with 11 shots, but Chestnut Hill outlasted Wheeling Jesuit. The Griffins put five goals past WJU  to end the game up 17-9.

Wheeling Jesuit travels to Lakewood, N.J. to take on Georgian Court in another non-conference game on Tuesday, February 26 at 3:30 p.m.
