WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 20) – The Wheeling Jesuit University men's basketball team picked up its sixth Mountain East Conference (MEC) win this season with a 100-72 victory over Glenville State at the McDonough Center on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals improve to 7-18 overall, 6-13 in the MEC with the win. Wheeling Jesuit now leads Glenville State by one game in the conference standings and controls the ninth place spot. The Pioneers fall to 5-14 in the conference, 10-15 overall with the loss.
Five WJU players scored in double-digits for the second consecutive game. Freshman forward DeAndre Robinson (Monroeville, Ala./Monroe County) had a game-high 26 points, shooting four of five from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Steve Cannady (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) tallied 20 points, six rebounds and five assists in a well-rounded performance.
Glenville State got out to an early lead, going up 9-3 in the first three minutes of the game. Wheeling Jesuit turned the contest around quickly though, going on a 14-2 run in the following four minutes. The Cardinals kept that momentum going for the remainder of the first half. WJU shot 58 percent from the field and knocked down eight three-pointers to give them a 53-30 advantage at the break.
The Pioneers went on a 15-8 run to start the second half and were able to cut the deficit to six points, 61-45. They kept the game in hand until the Cardinals slammed down back-to-back dunks. Freshman forward Emmanuel Ansong (Bordentown, N.J./Canterbury School) came up with the first jam just inside the 11-minute mark. On the next possession, freshman guard Franck Kamgain (Kansas City, Mo./DME Sports Academy) stole the rock and dunked on an open basket. The second dunk put Wheeling Jesuit up 75-53.
The Cardinals maintained their advantage and reached 100 points on the night when sophomore guard English Dowery (Cincinnati, Ohio/Finneytown) converted both of his free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Wheeling Jesuit did not miss many shots throughout the game. The Cardinals shot 54 percent from the field, 43 percent from downtown, and 87 percent from the free throw line.
Glenville State was held to shooting 37 percent from the field. Phil Bledsoe posted a team-high 17 points in the loss.
The Cardinals will travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a MEC showdown on Saturday, February 23. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
