WHEELING, W. Va (Oct. 9) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team was defeated by Notre Dame (Ohio) 3-1 at Bishop Schmitt Field Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame struck first in the 46th-minute to give the Falcons a 1-0.
• The Falcons added another goal when a free kick from 45 yards out found the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
• Wheeling didn't give up. In the 70th-minute, junior forward Kendra Benzel (Bernville, Pa. / Tulpehocken) offered up a free kick from midfield that bounced five yards in front of the Notre Dame goalkeeper and through traffic.
• The kick went under the foot of sophomore, Braedynn Porter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio / Mineral Ridge) and trickled into the net to slice the Cardinal deficit in half.
• Urbana added an insurance goal in the 85th minute to make the score 3-1 and put the game away.

MATCH NOTES

• Freshman goalkeeper Mikayla Yarwood (Surrey, British Columbia / Clayton Heights)  finished with seven saves in the match.
• Notre Dame tallied 22 total shots compared to Wheeling's nine
• The Cardinals finished with four more saves than the Falcons registering 10 total saves compared to just six for the Falcons

• After a week off, Wheeling will head down to Charleston, West Virginia to play the Golden Eagles on Thursday October 17. The match scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m.
