Cardinals taken down at Charleston, 3-1

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Oct. 17) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team was defeated 3-1 at Charleston Thursday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wheeling opened up the scoring as junior Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) scored for the second time in three matches. The goal came in the 32nd minute on a cross from sophomore Braedynn Porter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge).
  • Charleston answered in the 38th minute to bring the match to a tie. 
  • With just 25 seconds remaining in the first half, the Golden Eagles took the lead to make the score 2-1 heading into the locker rooms.
  • Charleston added another goal to increase the lead 3-1 in the opening minutes of the second half.
  • The Golden Eagles remained on the offensive and maintained the lead until the final whistle.

MATCH NOTES

  • Senior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) finished with four saves in the match.
  • Charleston finished with a 18-to-8 advantage in shots.
