Women's soccer knocked off at Urbana, 4-2

URBANA, Ohio (Oct. 6) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team was defeated 4-2 at Urbana Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Urbana struck quickly with a goal near the third minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Blue Knights added another in the 11th minute and took a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
  • Wheeling got on the board five minutes into the second half when Urbana turned the ball over deep in its own zone.
  • Sophomore Braedynn Porter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) touched a pass to junior Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) who finished low-right and past the keeper to make the score 2-1.
  • Urbana responded with two-straight goals to up its lead to 4-1, before the Cardinals tallied a second goal in the 70th minute.
  • Magruder got the ball around mid-field and dumped the ball off to junior Zoe Smalley (Coshocton, Ohio/River View). 
  • Smalley sent a cross from left to right into the middle of the box and Porter redirected the ball into the back of the net.
  • The goal would be as close as the Cardinals got, as Urbana held on for the 4-2 win.
MATCH NOTES
  • Senior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) finished with eight saves in the match.
  • Urbana finished with a 22-to-15 advantage in shots, but only a 12-to-9 edge in shots on goal.
