Cardinals knocked off by No. 20 Charleston, 4-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 6) – The Wheeling University men's soccer team was defeated 4-1 by No. 20 Charleston in a Mountain East Conference match Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals shocked the Golden Eagles with a goal 40 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Junior Gaizka Redondo (Vizcaya, Spain/Salesianos Duesto) made a nice play to gain possession and sent a cross from about 30 yards out into the box.
  • Sophomore Miguel Martin (El Tigre, Venezuela/Marcet Football Academy) streaked down the center of the field and headed the cross past the Charleston goalkeeper to give the Cards the lead.
  • Charleston eventually responded with a pair of goals in the 13th- and 16th-minutes to claim a 2-1 advantage. The Golden Eagles eventually added a third goal in the 40th minute to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
  • Charleston suffocated Wheeling's offense in the second half and limited the Cardinals to one shot on its way to a 4-1 win.
MATCH NOTES
  • The Cardinals were out-shot 20-to-5 for the match.
  • Wheeling junior goalkeeper Josh Zimmerman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) made six saves in the loss.
  • UC was charged with 16 fouls and a pair of yellow cards in the match. Wheeling was tagged with seven fouls and was issued one yellow card.
  • Charleston is ranked No. 20 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division II poll.
