Cardinals rally but fall in overtime at Glenville State, 3-2

GLENVILLE, W.Va. (Oct. 23) – The Wheeling University women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime, but were defeated 3-2 at Glenville State Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After 25 minutes of scoreless play, Glenville State netted the first goal of the game.
  • The Pioneers tacked on a second goal 11 minutes later and headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
  • Wheeling got on the board in the second half during the 69th-minute.
  • Junior Allyson Evans (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) took a corner-kick that went to the far-side post, where freshman Shiann Thomas (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) headed the ball past the Pioneer keeper to slice the deficit in half.
  • The Cardinals managed to tie the game up less than 10 minutes later following another corner-kick attempt.
  • Senior Micah Miller (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) took a corner that leaked back towards her foot on the left side of the field.
  • Miller sent the ball back into the box and junior Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) found an opening in front of the net to head the ball past the keeper to tie the game up at 2-2 in the 77th-minute.
  • Neither team managed to score in the final 13 minutes of regulation, sending the match into an extra session. 
  • In overtime, the Pioneers managed to sneak a ball into the backline where a streaking Glenville State player got behind the defense and scored the game-winning goal.
MATCH NOTES
  • Wheeling held a 16-to-13 advantage in total shots. Glenville held a narrow edge in shots on goal at 6-to-5.
  • The Cardinals attempted five corner kicks, compared to just one for the Pioneers. Wheeling scored both its goals off of corner attempts.
  • Glenville State was charged with 10 fouls, while the Cardinals were whistled four times.
