Women's Soccer dealt loss by Fairmont State, 4-1

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Oct. 23) – The Wheeling University women's soccer team was handed a 4-1 loss at Fairmont State Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got on the board quickly when a bad tackle inside the box resulted in a penalty kick attempt 78 seconds into the match.
  • Senior Micha Miller (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) was tasked with attempting the kick and found the back of the net to give Wheeling an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Falcons answered back in the 18th minute on a goal off of a cross to even the score at 1-1.
  • Fairmont State took the lead minutes later when a header squeezed by goalie Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead in the 22nd minute.
  • Fairmont State attack continued and the Falcons added two more insurance goals to secure the win.
MATCH NOTES
  • Herter made seven saves in the loss for the Cardinals.
  • Junior forward Kendra Benzel (Bernville, Pa. / Tulpehocken) registerd four shots on goal for the Cardinals.

  • Wheeling will head back on the road and travel to MEC opponent Glenville State on Sunday, October 27 to take on the Pioneers at 2 p.m.
