No. 19 Wheeling secures win over Malone, 3-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 22) – The No. 19 Wheeling University volleyball team collected a 3-1 win over Malone in a non-conference tilt inside the McDonough Center Tuesday night.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Senior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) led the team with a season-high 18 kills on 29 attacks with two errors (.552 hitting percentage). She also chipped in two blocks and three digs on defense.
  • Junior Breanna Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) posted a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. She also added a trio of blocks.
  • Sophomore Allonda Watkins (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) finished with a season-high 14 kills on 25 attacks with three errors (.440). She led the team with five blocks (one solo).
  • Junior Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) produced her first kill-dig double-double in a month with 11 kills and 13 digs.
  • Senior Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) tossed around 55 assists to guide the offense. She also recorded a team-high 19 digs in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals looked strong early on and established leads of 15-7 and 22-9 in the first set, before wrapping up a 1-0 lead at 25-14 on a kill by Meyer.
  • Malone hung with Wheeling for the most part in the second set. Despite never leading, the Pioneers kept the deficit around three or four points.
  • Wheeling closed out the set strong. The Cardinals led 19-17, before taking the game at 25-18 behind five kills.
  • Wheeling led 10-5 early in the third set and appeared to be on its way to another three-game sweep.
  • Malone rallied with a 10-2 run to take a 15-12 lead. The Cardinals committed four attack errors and had a service error during the run.
  • The Pioneers did not relinquish the lead and kept a three-point cushion throughout the set on their way to a 25-19 win that made the score 2-1.
  • The two teams traded the lead multiple times in the fourth set, before Malone emerged with a 22-19 lead late.
  • The Cardinals rolled off five-straight points, including a trio of Breanna Kramer kills, to push themselves to the brink of a win at 24-22.
  • After a Malone point, Watkins smacked down the match-clinching point to give the Cardinals a 3-1 win.
UP NEXT
  • Wheeling returns to Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Saturday, October 26 to play West Virginia State (14-9, 7-0 MEC) at 1 p.m.
  • Fans are advised that the Wheeling University football team also starts its game Saturday at 1 p.m. and parking will be limited.
