WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (Oct. 2) – The Wheeling University men's soccer team came up short in a 2-1 loss at West Liberty Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hilltoppers struck first seconds before halftime when a header off a rebound from an indirect free kick found the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
  • It didn't take long for the Cardinals to answer back. Sophomore Miguel Martin (El Tigre, Venezuela / Marcet Football Academy) headed a cross from classmate Javier Mangado (La Rioja, Spain / IES Praxedes Mateo Sagasta) to tie the score at 1-1 52 seconds into the second half.
  • West Liberty reclaimed the lead minutes later to take a 2-1 lead in the 49th-minute.
  • The Cardinals attempted four shots in the final 14 minutes, including three on-goal, but were unable to come up with the equalizer.
MATCH NOTES
  • Sophomore midfielder Andres Caceres (Bogota, Columbia) led the Cardinals with four shots in the match, including two on-goal.
  • The Cardinals edged out the Hilltoppers 14-to-12 in shots. Wheeling had six on-target, while West Liberty only put three on-goal.
  • First-year West Liberty Head Coach Sean Regan, a Wheeling alum, earned his first win as head coach of the Hilltoppers in the match. He is the son of 35th-year Wheeling Head Coach Jim Regan.
