Fievet propels Wheeling past Concord, 2-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 12) – A pair of goals by senior Lucas Fievet (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) helped the Wheeling University men's soccer team knock off Concord 2-1 Saturday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest on homecoming.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Concord scored the initial goal of the match in the 12th-minute when Maxime Ramioulle found the back of the net from about 30 yards out.
  • Despite both keepers being tested in the final 15 minutes of the first half, no other goals were scored and the Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead into the half.
  • Wheeling tied the match up in the 68th-minute. Junior goalkeeper Josh Zimmerman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) sent a free-kick into the attacking zone and sophomore Miguel Martin (El Tigre, Venezuela/Marcet Football Academy) passed the ball ahead to a streaking Fievet.
  • The Pittsburgh native got behind the Concord back line and chipped the ball over the charging Mountain Lion keeper to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Fievet found the back of the net once again in the 78th-minute to put the team ahead 2-1.
  • Sophomore Gaizka Redondo (Viscaya, Spain/Salesianos Duesto) took possession and sent a pass from midfield to Fievet, who finished from inside the box to give Wheeling the lead.
  • The Cardinals held off the Mountain Lions in the final 11 minutes of the match to secure their first points in MEC play this season.
MATCH NOTES
  • Zimmerman made five stops in net to earn the win.
  • Both teams finished with 11 shots and 13 fouls, apiece.
