WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (Jan. 26) – The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team was knocked off by West Liberty 77-49 when they traveled up the hill for a Mountain East Conference (MEC) showdown on Saturday night.
The Cardinals drop to 1-11 in the MEC, 3-15 overall with the loss. The Hilltoppers improve to 11-7 overall, 8-4 in conference action with the win.
Senior forward
Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) once again threw down a double-double, her 12
th of the season, by posting a team-high 18 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Junior guard
Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) knocked down five shots from the field and one shot from downtown to tally 12 points for the game.
Wheeling Jesuit was neck and neck with West Liberty for the duration of the first half. Moore drove into the lane for a layup in the final minute of the second quarter to bring the Cardinals within five points of the Hilltoppers, 35-30.
The Hilltoppers separated themselves from the Cardinals in the third quarter after Taylor Johnson went on a 14 point tear. Wheeling Jesuit was unable to recover from the deficit, but the Cardinals did hold West Liberty to a mere 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Wheeling Jesuit won the turnover battle against West Liberty. WLU was forced to make 18 turnovers while WJU only turned the ball over 11 times.
The Hilltoppers made 12 three-pointers to create the separation needed to defeat the Cardinals.
Johnson led all players in scoring with 29 points, while Marissa Brown tied Moore's game-high of 17 boards.
The Cardinals will finish the current stretch of road games at Fairmont State on Wednesday, January 30. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
