FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Jan. 30) - The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team was handed an 84-56 loss at Fairmont State Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.
The loss sends the Cardinals to 1-12 in the MEC, 3-16 overall. Meanwhile, the Falcons improve to 8-11 overall, 5-8 in league play.
Senior forward
Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) posted her 13th double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while junior forward
Lauren Lipscomb (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington North) added 11 points in the loss.
Fairmont State established a 21-6 lead after the first quarter, before the Cardinals closed the gap by out-scoring the Falcons 20-14 in the second period to draw within single-digits at 35-26 entering halftime. Wheeling Jesuit trailed 32-17 with 4:10 left in the second quarter when they ended the half with a 9-3 spurt that was carried by seven free throws.
Fairmont State reestablished command of the game with a big third quarter and took a 62-36 heading into the final frame. Wheeling Jesuit was unable to cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter and allowed the Falcons to hold on for the victory.
Wheeling Jesuit shot 18 of 60 (30 percent) from the field, compared to the 29 of 58 (50 percent) posted by Fairmont State.
Rachel Laskody led the Falcons with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds.
The Cardinals return home on Saturday, February 2 when they welcome Shepherd for a conference game at 2 p.m.
