SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (Jan. 23) – The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team was defeated by Notre Dame (Ohio) 70-61 in a midweek Mountain East Conference (MEC) clash at the Murphy Gymnasium.
The Cardinals fall to 3-14 overall, 1-10 in the MEC with the loss. The Falcons improve to 6-5 in conference play, 9-8 overall with the win.
Senior forward Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) registered game-highs of 30 points and 16 rebounds to record her 11th double-double of the season. Junior guard Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) scored 17 points and dished out four assists.
The first quarter was tightly contested by Wheeling Jesuit with the Cardinals leading by as many as three points and falling behind by no more than four points. The second period started with the Falcons going on an 8-0 run to push their advantage to 12 points, 28-16.
The Cardinals were unable to get back within a single-digit deficit to Notre Dame until the final two minutes of the game when Moore dropped 11 points. The late effort was not enough to overcome the double-figure lead established by the Falcons in the second quarter.
Notre Dame began their ascendancy by shooting over 50 percent from the field in the first half. Wheeling Jesuit, on the other hand, shot just 32 percent from the floor during that stretch.
Notre Dame had three players score in double digits in the contest, including a 24 point effort by Seina Adachi.
The Cardinals will be heading to the campus of West Liberty for another MEC matchup on Saturday, January 26. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
