Cardinals suffer loss at West Virginia State, 104-79

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jan. 12) – The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team fell 104-79 at West Virginia State in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-11 overall, 1-7 in the MEC standings. The Yellow Jackets improve their record to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in league play.

Senior forward Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) racked up her ninth double-double of the season and led the Cardinals with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and six steals. Junior guard Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) added 13 points, while sophomore Tori Harrison (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) supplemented 11 points.

West Virginia State shut out WJU in the first four minutes of the game, taking an early 12-0 lead. Moore put the Cardinals on the board after making a layup to break the Yellow Jackets' streak, but the State went on to outscore the Cardinals by 28 to end the first half with a 63-35 lead.

Wheeling Jesuit matched West Virginia State point-for-point in the third quarter and out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 14-9. The Cardinals were unable to gain on the Yellow Jackets' lead though and went into the fourth quarter down, 90-61. Moore drove to the basket and went to the line multiple times in the fourth quarter to gain nine points for WJU. The Cardinals outscored the Yellow Jackets in the second half 44-41, but they were unable to come back.

The Cardinals will be back at home for a MEC battle against Concord on Thursday, January 17 at 5:30 p.m.
