WHEELING, W.Va. (Jan. 17) - The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team was defeated 90-51 Thursday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest at the McDonough Center.
The Cardinals drop to 3-12 overall, 1-8 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Mountain Lions improve to 7-2 in the league standings, 11-3 overall this season.
Junior guard
Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) led WJU with 14 points, while senior forward
Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
Concord marched out to a 25-8 lead after 10 minutes of play and limited the Cardinals to another eight-point frame in the second quarter to take a commanding 48-16 advantage into halftime. The Mountain Lions shot 19 of 30 (63 percent) in the first half, compared to the 7-of-35 (20 percent) posted by Wheeling Jesuit.
Concord's first half lead proved to be too much for WJU to overcome in the second stanza. The Cardinals nearly doubled their field goal total and shot 31 percent from the field, but the Mountain Lions still managed to knock down 54 percent of their own shots and sealed the conference win.
Wheeling Jesuit forced Concord into 16 turnovers and converted 8-of-9 (89 percent) from the free-throw line. The Mountain Lions ended the night shooting 34 of 58 (57 percent) with 16 assists on their final line.
Both Andreanna Pool and Riley Fitzwater posted 21 points to lead Concord in the box score.
The Cardinals will return to the McDonough Center floor on Saturday, January 19 when they welcome Virginia-Wise for a MEC game at 2 p.m.
NOTE: The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball alumni game originally slated for this Saturday has been postponed until February.
