Late goals lift Urbana past WJU, 3-2

URBANA, Ohio (Sept. 8) – A pair of late goals sent the Wheeling Jesuit University men's soccer team to a 3-2 loss at Urbana Saturday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.

The Cardinals fall to 2-1-1 overall, 1-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Blue Knights improve to 1-0-1 in the MEC, 2-1-1 this season.

WJU established the lead in the 21st-minute when freshman Pedro Crespo (Madrid, Spain/Santa Maria) found the back of the net to make the score 1-0. The Cardinals maintained the lead into halftime and held a 5-to-1 shot advantage in the process.

Urbana managed to knot the match up at 1-1 seven minutes into the second half, but a strike by sophomore McKinley Fodness (Issaquah, Wash.) less than three minutes later propelled the Cardinals back in front at 2-1.

The Blue Knights managed to tie and establish their first lead of the evening with goals in the 78th and 86th minutes of the contest to make the score 3-2. The Cardinals had a final scoring opportunity in the 89th-minute when they were awarded a corner kick, but came away unsuccessful.

Senior goalkeeper Tyler Shotwell (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) made a pair of saves in net for Wheeling Jesuit.

Urbana held a 12-10 advantage in shots for the match, including a 5-to-2 edge in shots on goal.

The Cardinals will look to get back on track on Wednesday, September 12 when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a MEC match around 8 p.m.
