WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 12) - A goal in the 106th-minute by sophomore midfielder
McKinley Fodness (Issaquah, Wash.) helped the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team break the stalemate with West Virginia Wesleyan and come away with a 1-0 double-overtime win at Bishop Schmitt Field Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Bobcats drop to 0-3-2 overall and 0-3-0 in the conference standings.
WJU took 16 shots throughout the game, with seven of those shots on goal. Fodness took the shot that counted the most when he scored off a direct free-kick halfway through the second overtime period. His attempt caught the West Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper off-guard and the ball ricocheted off of the crossbar and into the net for the golden goal.
WVWC only managed to get off four shots throughout regulation, but shot seven times in overtime. Goalkeeper Sahil Dhunnookchand made six saves before allowing the match's lone goal.
Much of the first half was a deadlock in midfield, with each team registering just two shots each through 40 minutes. The second half was more up-tempo with each team being handed two yellow cards as they looked to get an edge on their opponent.
The Bobcats came close to scoring in regulation when Kazuma Tagaki struck the post in the 80th minute. After a scoreless first period of overtime, the Cardinals were awarded a free kick in the 106th minute. Fodness stepped up and took a quick free kick that caught the opposing goalkeeper off-guard and landed in the back of the net to end the game in dramatic fashion.
The Cardinals will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 15 when they host California University of Pennsylvania for a non-conference match at 1 p.m.
