Men's soccer plays to draw with Cal U, 1-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 15) – The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Bishop Schmitt Field.

The Cardinals move to 3-1-2 overall and have now played in consecutive double-overtime matches. Meanwhile, the Vulcans improve to 1-0-3 on the season.

Cal U managed to score the game's opening goal when goalkeeper Lucas Exner attempted a goal-kick that slipped through mid-field and allowed Vulcan forward Conner Griest to get behind the Cardinals defense for a breakaway goal in the 18th-minute.

Wheeling Jesuit had a trio of opportunities in the first half to tie the match up, including a header by freshman Teavon Spencer (Orlando, Fla./Evans) that sailed just above the crossbar.

The Cardinals finally broke through in the 67th-minute when sophomore Gaizka Redondo (Vizcaya, Spain/Salesianos Duesto) led senior Martin Manuzzi (Cordoba, Argentina/Nazareth) with a pass that got behind the Vulcan backfield. Manuzzi chipped the ball over the charging Cal goalkeeper from 10 yards out to even the score at 1-1.

Wheeling Jesuit had multiple chances to take the lead in the final 23 minutes of regulation, but were unable to convert. The Cardinals drew a Vulcan red card in the 81st-minute on a clear-path foul, forcing Cal to play with 10 players for the remainder of the match, and had a scoring chance knocked away from the net by a Vulcan defender moments later.

The Cardinals controlled the pace of the opening overtime session, attempting five-unanswered shots and one corner kick. Cal U had the two best scoring chances of the second overtime period, including a ball that rung off of the crossbar and a shot saved by freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Bosmyr (Joenkoeping, Sweden/Erik Dahlbergs).

Bosmyr made six saves in net to earn the draw.

Wheeling Jesuit as a team held a 21-to-12 advantage in shots and a 7-to-2 edge in corner-kick attempts.

The Cardinals will return to action on Thursday, September 20 when they host Notre Dame (Ohio) in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match at 5:30 p.m.
