WHEELING, W. Va. – Two goals late in the game for Wheeling Jesuit by Olivia Liston sent the Cardinals into overtime against Seton Hill, 3-3. Emily LoPresti was able to score the winning goal for the Griffins in the 96th minute which ended the game 4-3.
The Cardinals (0-2-0/0-0-0 MEC) were able to shutout Seton Hill (2-1-0/1-1-0 PSAC) in the first half with solid defense. The Griffins took four shots in the first ten minutes of the match, but that did not phase WJU.
Maria Ruggery, Brianna Murgi and Micah Miller worked hard to keep the ball out of the Cardinals net while Elexis Brown stopped multiple runs down her sideline by the Griffins. Goalie Asya Carney also came out of the net multiple times to sweep up the ball before SHU had a chance to put a foot on it.
With less than 10 minutes left to go in the first-half, Emily Hartley took a shot from the top of the penalty box and sent the ball right over Eliza P-Herzing's fingertips, putting WJU up 1-0. Marley Magruder, Kayla Klock and Allyson Evans took shots on goal, but none would fall.
The Griffins started the second half strong with three goals in the first 15 minutes by Italia Biondi, Emily LoPresti and Alyssa Neast. Olivia Liston answered back for the Cardinals with two goals of her own. In the 60th minute, Liston took a shot from 20 yards out and was able to float the ball right above the goalie's grasp. Using this momentum, she headed the ball in off a corner kick from Emily Hartley just a few moments later which tied the game 3-3.
After just two minutes of overtime play, Micah Miller took a shot for the Cardinals, but it was blocked by Eliza P-Herzing. Karly Judy followed the shot and managed to get a foot on the ball after it had bounced away from the goalie. The shot barely went wide of the net. Emily LoPresti shot and scored for the Griffins in the 96th minute, ending the game 4-3.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 8th at Urbana University. The game kicks off at 4 p.m.
