WJU Men's Soccer Puts Away Six in Conference Opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team traveled to Shepherd University for their Mountain East Conference opener this afternoon and came away with an emphatic 6-0 win.

WJU improved to 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the MEC standings with the victory. SU dropped to 0-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in MEC play with the loss.

The Cardinals scored six times on 22 shots with 14 of those shots directed towards goal. Defensively, Wheeling Jesuit only allowed seven shots in the entire match and were able to keep their third consecutive clean sheet for the season. The WJU defense has yet to allow a goal this year.

The Rams played well in the first half. Only one of the six goals scored by the Cardinals came in the first half of the game. After allowing the opening goal in the 3rd minute, Shepherd was able to shutout Wheeling Jesuit until the second goal came in the 49th minute.

Martin Minuzzi once again opened the scoring with his goal in the 3rd minute after being assisted by Lucas Fievet. The game appeared to only have one goal in it until the 49th minute when Pedro Crespo scored the second. Within two minutes, Pedro Crespo scored again, this time assisted by Teavon Spencer, to make the scoreline 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals. Senan Gilcreest then came on to score the game's fourth goal in the 68th minute. The Cardinals continued with their relentless attack and added two late goals by Cesar Carlin and Troy McAuliff to bring the total to six for the match. Miguel Martin and Adam Pannebaker also had assists of their own.

WJU will travel to Urbana University next for another MEC matchup at 6:30 p.m. on Sep. 8.
