Wheeling Jesuit thwarted by West Liberty, 1-0

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (Sept. 27) – An early second half goal was the difference, as the Wheeling Jesuit University women's soccer team was dealt a 1-0 loss by West Liberty Thursday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 1-7 overall, 0-4 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers improve to 2-1-1 in the MEC, 2-4-2 overall this season.

The first half of the match ended scoreless after several shots on goal by Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty were unable to find the back of the net.

The Hilltoppers took charge of the match at the beginning of the second half. West Liberty scored the eventual game-winning goal one minute into the period and held the Cardinals without a shot on-goal attempt in the second half to secure the win.

West Liberty finished the match with 19 shot attempts, including six on goal. Junior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin), who was making her first start of the season, recorded five saves to help keep the Cardinals within striking distance throughout the match.

The Cardinals will face another MEC road test when they travel to Buckhannon on Sunday, September 30 to take on West Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
