Women's Soccer clipped in overtime by Notre Dame, 2-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 20) - A goal in the second overtime was the difference, as the Wheeling Jesuit University women's soccer team fell to Notre Dame (Ohio) 2-1 Thursday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match on Bishop Schmitt Field.

The Cardinals fall to 0-2 in the MEC, 1-5 overall. Meanwhile, the Falcons improve to 2-4 this season, 2-1 in conference play.

Notre Dame controlled the pace of the first half, attempting all five of the game's shot attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper Asya Carney (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) was up to the task, recording three saves to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

Wheeling Jesuit's first scoring opportunity of the match came in the 63rd-minute when sophomore Kendra Benzel (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) attempted a free-kick that deflected off of the cross-bar, keeping the game scoreless.

Notre Dame notched the first goal of the match in the 78th-minute on a free-kick from distance that took a fortuitous bounce over the Cardinal goalkeeper and into the net.

Wheeling Jesuit was down to its final three minutes, when sophomore Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) collected a blocked shot inside the box and chipped the ball into the net to tie the game and send it into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Notre Dame had the first extra-session scoring-chance when they had a shot from just outside the box go wide right of the net. The Falcons kept the pressure on and eventually notched the game-winning goal on a ball that bounced off of the crossbar and tricked across the goal-line to end the game.

Carney made eight saves in the match for the Cardinals, who were out-shot 24-to-6 on the night.

The Cardinals host Fairmont State on Sunday, September 23 for a MEC match on Bishop Schmitt Field at 4 p.m.
