INDIANA, Pa. (Sept. 18) - The Wheeling Jesuit University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-8, 25-15) at Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday evening inside the Memorial Field House in a non-conference match.
The Cardinals, ranked No. 19 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top-25 poll, improve to 12-3 overall. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks, who were NCAA Atlantic Region Semi-finalists last season, fall to 4-11 this season.
Recently crowned
Mountain East Conference (MEC) Player of the Week Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) led WJU with 11 kills and added eight digs in the win. Junior setter
Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) tossed around 35 assists, while sophomore
Audrey Francis (Sydney, Ohio/Fairlawn) finished with a match-best 22 digs to pace the defense.
IUP hung with the Cardinals early in the first set and pulled within two, 9-7, to force a WJU timeout. The Cardinals came out of the break focused and ran off seven of the next nine points to establish a 16-9 advantage. The Crimson Hawks got as close as 18-13, but eventually Wheeling Jesuit managed to close out the set at 25-17.
The Cardinals dominated the second set and ran away with a 25-8 win; their second-largest margin of victory in a set this season (WJU won a set over Wisc.-Parkside 25-7). Wheeling Jesuit led 9-3, before rolling off 14 of the next 16 points to pull out to a 23-5 lead in the set.
WJU continued to assert their dominance over the Crimson Hawks by establishing an 11-3 lead in the early stages of the third set. IUP made a run to get back into the set at 18-14, before the Cardinals pulled away to wrap up a 25-15 win and a sweep in the match.
Wheeling Jesuit, which ranks 12th in the MEC in service aces, finished the match with six, including four from sophomore
Kenzie Schroer (New Knoxville, Ohio/New Knoxville).
IUP was limited to 25 total kills and were forced into 22 attack errors. Jessica Ignace led the Crimson Hawks with nine kills on the night.
The Cardinals will head to the Buckeye State for an MEC road trip with matches on Friday and Saturday, September 21-22 at Notre Dame (Ohio) and Urbana. WJU's match Friday night at Notre Dame will begin at 7 p.m.
