Cardinals take down Urbana, 3-1

URBANA, Ohio (Sept. 22) - Led by a career-high 29 kills from sophomore Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center), the Wheeling Jesuit University volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Urbana in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals improve to 13-3 overall, 3-0 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Blue Knights fall to 0-2 in conference play, 11-6 overall this season.

Meyer produced her seventh kill-dig double-double of the season with 15 digs to go with her 29 kills. She hit .352 with just four attack errors on 71 total attacks.

Junior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) also tallied double-digit kills with 15, including a team-best .382 hitting percentage.

Junior Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) established a new season-high with 62 assists and added 12 digs. Sophomore Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) also registered a season-best with 34 digs on defense.

Francis, Sylvester and Meyer were three of five Cardinals to finish with double-digit digs. Freshman Jenna Karl (Tiro, Ohio/Buckeye Central) and sophomore Makenna Babb (Arlington, Ohio/McComb) had 18 and 15, respectively.

Wheeling Jesuit only had a two-point lead at 9-7 in the first set, before rolling off 10 of the next 14 to take a 19-13 advantage. Urbana battled back to tie the set at 21-21, but four-straight points by the Cardinals, including a pair of Meyer kills, lifted the squad to a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Knights held the lead for the majority of the second set, including a 21-17 edge late. Wheeling Jesuit fought back to tie the set at 23 and again at 24, before back-to-back Urbana points tied the match up at 1-1.

The Cardinals held the edge for the first half of the third set and eventually established a 20-15 lead. Urbana rallied with four-straight points to draw within one at 20-19, but kills from Haley Kramer and Meyer helped WJU pull out a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Wheeling Jesuit dominated the fourth set to close out the victory. The Cardinals had runs of five and nine consecutive points and built up an 18-3 lead, before settling on a 25-9 win to clinch the match.

Wheeling Jesuit posted a season-high 102 total digs in the match.

The Cardinals return home to take on Seton Hill in a non-conference match on Tuesday, September 25 inside the McDonough Center at 7 p.m.
