JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 17) – A goal by sophomore
Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) helped the Wheeling Jesuit University women's soccer team earn its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Pitt-Johnstown Monday afternoon at Richland High School.
The Cardinals improve their overall record to 1-4 on the season, while the Mountain Cats slide to 3-4 overall.
After a slow start to the match, Magruder created a turnover on the UPJ side of the field and found the back of the net with her first goal of the season in the 23rd-minute to give the Cardinals the lead. Seniors
Emily Hartley (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) and
Karly Judy (Vanderbilt, Pa./Geibel Catholic) continued to attack for WJU with shots on goal, but none found the net. WJU totaled nine shots in the first half and held Pitt-Johnstown to only two.
Wheeling Jesuit had several more attempts to score in the second half, including a shot on goal by senior
Kayla Klock (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) in the 68th minute. The Mountain Lions managed to counter with a few scoring chances of their own, but sophomore goalkeeper
Asya Carney (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) stopped a trio of shots on goal to preserve the clean sheet.
Carney finished the match with three saves to earn both her first win and first-career shutout.
Wheeling Jesuit returns home on Thursday, September 20 for a Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup against Notre Dame at 8 p.m.
