Men's Soccer Scores Three Goals in Dominant Display

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team put on an impressive display in their 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown at Bishop Schmitt Field.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-0-1 on the season and remain undefeated. The Mountain Cats dropped to 0-1-0 with the loss.

The WJU defense did not allow a single shot in the entire first half of the game. The Cardinals' attack was also prolific, shooting 30 times with 16 shots on goal throughout the game. Martin Minuzzi, Alvaro Garrido, and Teavon Spencer were Wheeling Jesuit's three goal-scorers. Pedro Crespo added an assist to his stat totals when he set up Spencer for his goal.

UPJ gave a better effort in the second half, recording all four of their shots and winning two corner kicks. The Mountain Cats' goalkeeper, Jonathan Reboton, made 13 saves despite the three goals allowed.

The match was never in doubt as the Cardinals came out on the attack straight away and never let up. After five shots, including a header that struck the post, Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Adan Cabrera-Perez made a challenge that garnered a yellow card and set up Attacking Midfielder Martin Minuzzi for a free kick. From 17 yards out, he struck the ball from the spot perfectly to start the scoring for the Cardinals in the 21st minute.

The Cardinals continued to press up the pitch after getting the go-ahead goal and caused the Mountain Cats to make a defensive error and give up a penalty kick. Central Defender Alvaro Garrido confidently stepped up to the spot and drilled the ball into the back of the net to make the score 2-0 before the end of the first half.

Even after being up two goals, the Cardinals kept pressing forward from the back and were rewarded with a third goal in the second half. Forward Teavon Spencer put the game to bed with a strike from 10 yards out in the 53rd minute. The build-up play was superb with Midfielder Pedro Crespo providing the final pass before the strike.

The conference opener will be the next game up for WJU men's soccer as they travel to Shepherd University on Sep. 5th for a 2:30 p.m. matchup.
