INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - In the first day of the UIndy Invitational, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team lost 1-3 in their first match against Upper Iowa, but finished strong with a 3-2 result against Quincy.
The Cardinals' record moved to 4-2 on the season, while the Peacocks improved to 4-1 with their win and the Hawks fell to 5-1 with their loss.
WJU came back strong from a 2-0 deficit to take the third set from Upper Iowa 25-22 in the opening match of the UIndy Invitational. However, the Peacocks were able to prevail over the Cardinals in the final set 25-17 to win the match.
Makenzie Babb,
Stephanie Sylvester,
Jenna Karl, and
Audrey Francis ended the match for the Cardinals all with over 10 digs.
Cassie Meyer and
Haley Kramer led the team in kills with 19 and 16 while
Allonda Watkins and
Jenna Karl added four each.
In the first set, the Peacocks went up 18-10, but the Cardinals did not let that stop them. Wheeling Jesuit got five kills in a row, three by
Cassie Meyer, to bring them just two points behind Upper Iowa. The Cardinals were not able to capitalize on their momentum as the Peacocks reached 25 points with four kills by Haley Weepie.
The Cardinals went down 4-0 at the beginning of the second set, but
Cassie Meyers,
Haley Kramer, and
Kenzie Schroer were able to reverse the game with multiple kills each. The Peacocks took a run at the end, scoring five in a row to end the set 25-22.
WJU won the third set 25-22 with
Cassie Meyer and
Haley Kramer once again getting several kills each. The Peacocks were then able to go on several runs in the final set which ended with them winning 25-17.
Stephanie Sylvester helped the Cardinals by having 41 assists throughout the entire match.
Wheeling Jesuit's second match of the UIndy Invitational was decided in five sets. The Cardinals dominated in the first two sets (25-12, 25-13). The third set went back and forth with the Hawks having to reach 26 points to take the set by a two point margin. The fourth set saw the best performance from Quincy as they came out on top 25-16. WJU would not be denied in the end, however, taking the last set 15-10.
Cassie Meyer was the standout performer against Quincy as she led all players with 27 kills.
Stephanie Sylvester also had a good performance, leading all players with 53 assists while adding 17 digs and two aces.
Allonda Watkins led the Cardinals in blocks with six and tallied 12 kills.
Quincy's standout performers were Sarah Brown and Sara Rathbun. Brown had 11 kills and six blocks, while Rathbun posted 37 assists and four blocks.
The second day of the UIndy Invitational for the Cardinals begins tomorrow with a 10 a.m. matchup against Winona State before their final game of the tournament at 4 p.m. against Wisconsin-Parkside.
