Cardinals Come Back to Take No. 15 Argos in Five, No. 2 Mustangs Too Much Late

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Cardinals proved to the NCAA Division II volleyball ranks their mettle over the opening weekend. As the lowest ranked squad in the West Florida Tournament, Wheeling Jesuit claimed three wins in four matches as the most successful team.

WJU (3-1) rallied from down 2-1 (25-23, 24-26, 23-25) to take a 28-26 fourth set and behind an early match-deciding set run went on to prevail 15-11 over No. 15 West Florida. After starting almost two hours late in the nightcap, the No. 2 Mustangs of SW Minnesota State revved up their game and took care of the wary Cardinals in straight sets (25-19, 25-13 and 25-16).

Over the two days, WJU swept past No. 5 Western Washington, 3-0, and outlasted No. 7 Regis, 3-2, for a pair of Friday wins.

Second-year outside hitter Cassie Meyer recorded the top WJU hitting performance of the day. She lined 22 kills, dug 15 attacks and added four total blocks against West Florida. Meyer had six kills, six digs and a pair of blocks in the late match.

Makenna Babb continued her solid weekend with 28 kills, 35 digs and five block assists in the two matches.

Setter Stephanie Sylvester handed out her first 60-plus assist match of the year with 60 against West Florida, before she had 22 more late. Sylvester also contributed seven kills and 19 digs.

Haley Kramer finished with 18 kills, nine total blocks and two digs. Allonda Watkins posted 11 kills and four block assists.

Jenna Karl showed her all-around game with 30 digs, a pair of kills and two blocks. Audrey Francis patrolled the back row with 57 total digs.

Both Kramer and Sylvester were named to the All-Tournament team.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth set, the Cardinals held a 20-17 advantage on a Babb kill late. The two teams played to five ties over the next 15 points scored to make it 26-26. Meyer downed the 27th point, before Watkins blasted the winning point off a West Florida defender.

Tied at 8-8 in the fifth set, Sylvester and Meyer started a four-point swing with back-to-back kills and a 12-8 lead. WJU did not let West Florida back in the match-deciding set for a 15-11 final score and 3-2 victory.

WJU will head back to the Ohio Valley and have almost a week off before it heads to the University of Indianapolis Tournament for next Friday and Saturday (Aug. 31-Sept. 1). The Cardinals begin the weekend with an 8:30 a.m. contest against the Peacocks of Upper Iowa.
