Cardinals Volleyball Sweeps No. 5 Vikings, Outlasts No. 7 Rangers on Opening Day

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Cardinals' first two tests of arguably the toughest opening weekend schedule in the nation were a success. Wheeling Jesuit pulled off a pair of upsets with a sweep of No. 5 Western Washington and outlasted No. 7 Regis in five sets.

WJU (2-0) opened the morning match with an extended first set win, 27-25, and rode two strong finishes in the second two sets for the win over Western Washington (27-25, 25-22, 25-22). In a tale of two pair of sets, the Cardinals had their way with scores of 25-15 and 25-19, before the fellow Jesuit institution Rangers battled back to take sets three and four (25-22 and 25-18). WJU, though, rallied from down by four points early in the fifth set, before it rode two four-point spurts for the 15-12 final.

Middle blocker Haley Kramer picked up where she left off a year ago as she hit .483 in 58 swings in the eight sets with 32 kills. The junior opened the day with 22 kills and a .606 attack percentage against Western Washington. She added nine total blocks.
