Falcons Fight Off Game Cardinals Twice

WHEELING, W.Va. – It may be a tough year on the diamond overall, but the Cardinals are still a tough out. Fairmont State fought off Wheeling Jesuit baseball twice on Sunday to slip past with a 7-3 and 6-5 pair of wins.

The Falcons (15-14/9-7 Mountain East Conference North) took the lead in their first at bat in both games and had to battle back against the Cardinals (4-20/3-13 MEC North) each contest of the briskly cold afternoon.

WJU scored two times in the home first of the opener off only one hit and two visitor errors for a 2-1 lead. The home team, though, could not hold on to the lead the rest of the way.

Trailing 1-0 again in the home first of game two, Logan Schickler blasted a pitch over the right field fence for a three-run homer after back-to-back hits from Zach Blumling and Bobby Truelove. Fairmont State held a 5-3 advantage when Hayden Hizer lined a two-run, fifth-frame double down the third base bag to plate Adam Dennison and Schickler for a tie, 5-5. The Falcons edged ahead, 6-5, with a run in the sixth, before the Cardinals fell one hit shy of retying the contest leaving Dennison at third base.

Along with his three-run round tripper, Schickler added a game one sacrifice fly. Hizer doubled and singled, while Dennison accounted for three singles and two runs on the day. Truelove added a single in each contest. Blumling and Trescott had the other two home hits with each scoring once.

WJU has two days off until it makes up a single non-conference game against Alderson Broaddus at home on Wednesday afternoon, April 11. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
