Shepherd Slugs Past WJU Baseball

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Playing the defending Mountain Conference Champs proved a tall task for the Cardinals on Friday afternoon. Shepherd posted big early leads in both games against Wheeling Jesuit and took both contests, 11-2 and 12-6.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, the Cardinals (4-22/3-15 MEC North) tied the contest when Matt Angelini ran home on a wild pitch and Adam Dennison RBI double. The Rams (19-12/14-4 MEC North) answered with nine more runs over the next three frames.

The Rams busted out of the gate in game two with 11  in the first three innings. WJU did outscore the home team, 6-1, in the final 3.5 innings, with three two-run at bats, but it was not enough.

Tristan Grimes led the Cardinals hitters with a pair of doubles and a single to go with a run, two RBI and three walks. Hayden Hizer added a double and single. Dennison had the lone other extra-base hit with a two bagger.

Zach Blumling, Bobby Truelove and Angelini each chipped in a hit.

WJU wraps up its four-game series at Shepherd starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
