Scott Two-Run Hit Helps Cardinals Take Game 2 from Cavaliers

WISE, Va. – For the second time in two days, the Cardinals followed a tough game with a better result. Victoria Scott lined a two-run fifth-inning single up the middle to give Wheeling Jesuit a game two lead it did not give up in a 3-2 win over UVa.-Wise. The home team posted a 6-0 victory in the opener.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Courtney Rogers lofted a sac fly to right field to tie the game and score Alaina York, who had a leadoff single. Scott followed with her two-run hit to plate Cassie Holstein and Mallory Chapman, who singled and walked, for a 3-1 Cardinals (12-17/8-6 Mountain East Conference North) game. UVa.-Wise (20-12/9-7 MEC South) pushed across one run, before Chapman came on in relief and fanned the final two outs for the save.

UVa.-Wise used home runs in both the first and fifth innings as part of two multi-run at bats for a 6-0 lead. Cavaliers pitcher Taylor Brandts held WJU to only two hits despite the visitors putting multiple runners on base in both the third and fourth frames.

Scott paced the WJU offense with a double and a pair of singles with her two RBI and a stolen base. Holstein and Heather Pinney both singled twice. York, Chapman and Brianna Grimes added one hit apiece.

Erin Unterbrink (3-7) scattered 11 hits over 6.1 innings of work where she struck out six without a walk to pick up her second win in two days. Chapman went the final 2/3 innings for her first save of the season.

WJU returns home on Monday afternoon, April 8, in a makeup pair of games against West Liberty starting at 3 p.m.
