Cardinals Battle Tough, Go ahead Hit Alludes Against Falcons

WHEELING, W.Va. – As the season goes along, the Cardinals are in each contest. The young Wheeling Jesuit baseball team battled tough, but the go ahead hit alluded it against Fairmont State Friday afternoon in 5-0 and 6-4 final scores.

After pulling to within a run, 5-4, after two frames, the Cardinals (4-18/3-11 Mountain East Conference North) left five runners in scoring position from the third through six innings preventing a complete game two comeback.

In the opener, Josh Bell was solid on the WJU mound, but the home club managed only an Adam Dennison sixth-inning infield single and a Hayden Hizer seventh-inning double on the offense.

Hizer doubled and singled two times with an RBI as the top Cardinal hitter. Zach Blumling added a pair of hits with a RBI, one run and a stolen base in the late contest. Dennison lined a double and sacrifice fly to go with the game one infield single.

Tristan Grimes swiped two bases, including home, and singled, while Bobby Truelove singled himself and stole a base. Brad Trescott, Dom Davis and Matt Angelini rounded out the Cardinals with hits.

Hayden Hizer's over the back Game 2 catch.
In game one, Bell went the distance where he struck out eight Falcons and gave up seven hits.

Tanner Evans was strong in game two relief where he logged three frames and allowed only a run. Nick Luciano covered the final two innings with two hits and two strikeouts.

Trailing 3-0 in their first late game at bats, the Cardinals saw Blumling line a run-scoring single and Hizer a sac fly to pull within 3-2. Fairmont State put two more runs on the scoreboard in the second before, Dennison drove home Davis on a sac fly. Blumling and Grimes took off from first and third and safely stole second and home to make it a 5-4 score with WJU back by a single run again.

WJU, though, left runners on first and third in the third, a runner on second in both the fourth and fifth and Cardinals on both second and third in the sixth without getting any to home.

WJU and Fairmont State complete their MEC four-game series on Sunday afternoon, April 8, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
