Unterbrink Records Five-Hitter to Give WJU Split at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – Finally a day without rain and snow, the Cardinals moved up its weekend swing by two days. Erin Unterbrink answered the late call in the circle where she recorded a five-hitter in game two for a 1-0 Wheeling Jesuit softball win over Concord, which used a pair of multi-run frames for a 6-2 opening win.

After allowing two first-inning hits, Unterbrink earned her second Cardinals (11-16/7-5 Mountain East Conference North) win of the year by scattering one hit in the third, fourth and sixth. The contest was scoreless in the top of the seventh where Brianna Grimes walked, stole second and went to third on a home catcher throwing error, before Mallor Chapman followed with a sac fly for the game's lone run.

The Mountain Lions (11-13/8-6 MEC South) pushed home two fourth-frame runs on a two singles and a triple in game one. Cassie Holstein manufactured a WJU run in the fifth on a single, two stolen bases and a Chapman RBI ground out. Concord answered with four scores, two unearned on WJU miscues, on three hits to open a 6-1 lead. Grimes drove in the lone Cardinals run in the visiting seventh.

In her first shutout, Unterbrink (2-7) fanned three Mt. Lions, while she walked three to go with the five hits.

WJU had a trio of three-hit batters in Chapman, Courtney Rogers and Molly Welsh. Chapman accounted for two of the team's three RBI, while Welsh doubled and swiped a base.

Both Holstein and Victoria Scott produced two hits. Ashley Ledbetter doubled and stole a base in the opener. Alaina York and Heather Pinney added the other two singles.

WJU continues its moved up pair of dates with a noon twinbill on Friday, April 6, at The University of Virginia's College at Wise.
