Cardinals Fly Past Falcons, 21-2

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Wheeling Jesuit netted the first nine goals and flew past Notre Dame College in the women's lacrosse regular season finale, 21-2.
 
The Cardinals (6-9, 4-1 Mountain East Conference) dominated first-half play, scoring nine goals without allowing the Falcons (3-11/0-5 MEC) to touch the back of the net. Kori Hickman started the scoring at 23:13 after she cleared the ball past the 30-yard marker. Notre Dame scored its only two goals before intermission, but Kate Calder retaliated with a score to send the teams into the halftime break, 10-2. In the final half, WJU found the back of the net 11 consecutive times without giving NDC a single goal. WJU outshot its opponent, 38-17.

With the regular season in the books, the Cardinals move on for a chance of defending its MEC Tournament title. WJU earned the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 3 Shepherd on Friday afternoon. The MEC Tournament will be held at Regular Season champion and top seed UVa.-Wise in Wise, Va., with Charleston having the No. 4 seed.
 
Hayley Holmquist tallied three of the Cardinals opening nine scores, while Hickman and Gionna Alessandro both struck twice early. Holmquist led WJU's offensive attack with five goals. Calder, Hickman and Ally Coggins each netted three scores with respectively one, two and three assists. Markie Wright, Megan Mangia and Gionna Alessandro recorded two each. Paige Orbell added two more points with another goal and one assist.
 
WJU held a 14-12 advantage in ground balls as Calder led the Cardinals with three pickups. Taylor Quigg secured two ground balls and a team-high with four draw controls.
 
Calder also led the Cardinals' defensive efforts with three caused turnovers while Quigg and Wright followed with two each. 
 
WJU goalie, Chrissy Conklin, earned the victory with 12 saved shots on goal.
